way back wednesdays – tennessee

“Tennessee” by Arrested Development is just one of those timeless feel good songs. The single from the album “3 Years 5 Months & 2 Days in the life of…” won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1993. No matter how many times I hear this song I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.

Happy Way Back Wednesday! Enjoy!

mixtape mondays – melanie fiona x ?uestlove

So I decided to switch it up a little today for Mixtape Mondays. The mixes we post are usually a number of songs blended together… “WQST presents Melanie Fiona meets the Illadelphonics” brings you live remixes from Melanie Fiona’s album “The Bridge”.

With this album, ?uestlove invited Melanie Fiona over to his studio to record some live sessions of some well known songs and this was recorded as a radio interview on WQST. Download it. Enjoy it. And if you haven’t picked up Melanie Fiona’s “The Bridge”, go get it… sh*t, it came out in 2009. =)

Oh yea… and personally, I LOVE this version of “Monday Morning” over the album version.

soul sundays – the fact is (i need you)

Jill Scott’s “The Fact Is (I Need You)” is a song that every man should want to hear from his soul mate. Jill Scott is by far one of our favorite soul singers… and this song… wow. She never ceases to amaze us. From her album Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol.2 released in 2004, The Fact Is, is our favorite cut next to “Golden”. This song is just amazing.

“I can even raise the child we’ll make, make sure he’s loved and knows what God gave us, I can teach him how to walk and stand. But he needs you to help him be a man… We need you.” – My favorite part of the song…

mixtape mondays – ol’ school r&b flava’s

Well, there really isn’t too much to say other than that you need to download this mix as soon as you read the description below! A great mix of old and new R&B, keeping some of the original mix and adding their own touches…ENJOY!

Grand Groove DJ’s: This mix is inspired by the work of legendary New York mixtape DJ’s G-BO THE PRO AND DOUBLE R, with special thanks to our homie DJ NEIL ARMSTRONG for putting us up on game. Awhile back Royale showed me G-Bo the Pro and Double R #21. It was an instant hit receiving HEAVY rotation in the car. Roy then suggested the idea that we re-do the tape, a cover per se, adding our own Grand Groove touches throughout. Covering a mixtape, who does that!? So that’s what we did! We re did the B Side of the tape and flipped the cover too (thanks to Committee Design). While we kept a lot of the original tracklisting we also included some of our own personal favourites and original blends that we felt would fit in the mix.…”

soul sundays – song for my father

In honor of this day, we wanted to wish all the Fathers out there a wonderful day with Madlib’s “Song For My Father”. With your own children, or taken in by relationships, thank you for being great examples to your children and teaching them how to love and be respectful. For protecting them from the world and all that they need not see. Please continue to do what you do- whether you are single, separated, divorced or with your soulmate…Our children need more “Dads” in this world and sometimes not appreciated the way they should be…

“Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a Dad.” – Anne Geddes

Happy Father’s Day!

way back wednesdays – travellin’ man

Off DJ Honda’s  1998 second album ‘h II’, “Travellin’ Man” was a collaboration with Mos Def which became a hit single world wide. The music video was shot in places all around the world from Brazil to South Africa. With several versions of this song (original and remixes), and much confusion of which was which, we decided to post this “remix”. Happy Way Back Wednesday…Enjoy!
