the original jill scott from the vault, vol. 1

“The Original Jill Scott from the Vault, Vol. 1″ is a compilation album by Jill Scott, released August 2011 on Hidden Beach Recordings. It contains previous unreleased tracks recorded during sessions from June 2000 to October 2007 at several studios in Philadelphia. This special four-part documentary presented by Hidden Beach and CentricTV.com take us back to the beginning of the Hidden Beach story that birthed the queen of neo-soul’s rise to platinum fame and fortune. Enjoy!

“These are unheard masterpieces, some of which were meant to be the centerpiece of future albums”. – Hidden Beach founder Steve McKeever

“Hidden Beach is a safe haven for artists to express themselves and share the god given talents that they have, and that, I’m so grateful for.” – Jill Scott

Jill Scott….is…amazing.

mixtape mondays – raphael saadiq

Stumbled upon this older mix of nothing but music produced by Toni Tone Tony and Lucy Pearl front man Raphael Saadiq. It’s an older mix but definitely worth the download. With artist like D’Angelo, Earth Wind & Fire, Mary J, Angie Stone and more, this mix is must have. I hope that someone makes a part 2 though because Mr. Saadiq has also worked with Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and The Roots who are not on this mix. Anyhow, I looked and looked for a download link but couldn’t find one. So below is the Soundcloud link where you can listen to it. Check for the track list after the jump.

Enjoy!

soul sundays – angel (suite for ma dukes)

This Soul Sundays pick is nothing less than amazing…Dwele’s “Angel” is already such a great song, but you add Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the orchestra to it…leaves me speechless. With no rehearsal, seeing Dwele’s reaction makes me appreciate the collaboration that much more. A Suite for Ma Dukes is a live musical tribute to J Dilla arranged and conducted by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson with the help of Carlos Nino and a 60-piece orchestra.

Atwood-Ferguson said, “Dilla’s music is so heartfelt, soulful and transcendent. It is perfect for someone like me to reinterpret and celebrate in my own way. It’s really been fun for me to explore his music in an orchestral setting.”

We hope you enjoy and have a great Soul Sunday!

x factor

Wow…I just read this article from Los Angeles Times talking about this final decision for tonights X Factor, and I couldn’t disagree with it more. Five contestants left in the show and judges have expressed how important their performances are being that there is a 5 MILLION dollar contract on the line, yet this is what the contestants get when the judges are on the line….

“Don’t blame Nicole Scherzinger for the fact that Rachel Crow was sent home on “The X Factor” on Thursday night, just shy of next week’s semifinals. (I know, shocker.) All Scherzinger did was say what she needed to say to send the decision to “deadlock,” so the audience vote would determine whether Crow or Marcus Canty, this week’s bottom two, would be eliminated.” – LA Times

Yes, she is definitely to blame for this result of Rachel going home tonight! Sending the vote into “deadlock” had nothing to do with tonights performance and leaves us wondering what the heck these judges are there for and why they would even have to perform a “save me song”! Marcus Canty, yeah, he did his thing on this show (which also left him in the bottom two, three times!)…

Ok, enough of my X Factor rant…Just look at this video of 13 year old DIVA: Rachel Crow. Who would you have sent home, Rachel or Marcus?

way back wednesdays – all i need (remix)

This weeks Way Back Wednesday pick is one of those timeless classics, whether it’s dedicated to someone special or just appreciated for what it is. This 1994 version by Meth & Mary is just as great as the 1968 original by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, and was the only female/rap collaboration to achieve sales of over 1 million sales in the 90s. Enjoy!

Happy Way Back Wednesday!
