“In this episode, we celebrate legendary producer J Dilla, who has worked with The Roots, Common, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson and A Tribe Called Quest. Then we join musician friends J. Rocc, DJ Spinna, Frank Nitt and Grap Luva in Detroit to open Dilla’s storage locker, never-before-seen to the public.”
So some of you may or may not know the story behind our name, SO MUCH SOUL. The name initially was inspired by Common’s lyrics in I Used To Love H.E.R. “…and what I love most she had so much soul…” but, we were also HEAVILY influenced by the timeless, extraordinary, classic mixes by Vinroc and Shortkut entitled So Much Soul. These mixes are pretty much the soundtrack to our life.
This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the So Much Soul mixes. We were blessed enough to get in touch with Vinroc and Shortkut and were able to get involved with the anniversary going down this weekend February 11 at SOM in San Francisco. Check out this video by Vinroc, a live version of a track that he produced for the new So Much Soul mix and 10 year Anniversary event.
“My New Years resolution was to be more open about some music I’ve been working on. Here’s a quick rewrite of some lyrics to a song I’ve been working on to celebrate the So Much Soul Mixes 10 year anniversary. Come out this Sat Feb 11th to SOM in the Mission and hear the produced version! get a copy of the new Mix and just added: we will be raffling off a pair of Skullcandy Headphones and some giveaways from So Much Soul Los Angeles! Myself and Jon Shortkut Cruz in the mix. Really, get there early….” -Vinroc
Check out this soulful mix all based on the classic soultrack by Eddie Kendrick; Intimate Friends. You might be surprised on who used the sample. It’s super SOULFUL. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Check out the track list after the jump.
The beef between Common and Drake is officially on with Common responding to Drake’s subliminal diss on ‘Stay Schemin’ from Rick Ross’ recently released mixtape. Common takes the song, leaves Drake’s verse on there and then responds back. Check it.
I came across this mix a while back and I totally forgot to post it. But it seems like I was supposed to wait until now to post it. The weather is getting cold and this is the perfect mix to throw on, grab a blanket and cuddle with that special someone. This mix of smoothed out Neo Soul is mixed for us by JWill. Check the tracklist after the jumpWe hope you enjoy it… Love is love.
Common stopped by to visit our boys the LA Leakers and dropped a verse off his new album “The Dreamer, The Believer” which drops November 22, 2011.
“Every now and then a moment happens that you wish you had some kind of super power to pause time. Yesterday Common dropped by Power 106, next thing you know I found myself in a room listening to him kick a verse off his new album.” – Justin Credible
Back in January of 2009 our dude Justin Credible blessed us with what I dubbed “an eclectic mix of hip hop and R&B soul”. Souled Out: Session 1, brings you music from Alicia Keyes, Common, Maxwell, Mos Def, India Arie and many many more. This is such a good mix… and I think it’s about time that Justin comes back with Souled Out: Session 2. If you love this mix and want Justin Credible to release a Souled Out 2 please hit him on twitter @J_Credible.
