A nice little mix to end your Valentine’s Day…We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Thank you Justin Credible for this grown & sexy mix! Happy Valentine’s Day y’all!

Here’s what Justin had to say about this mix:
“Every year I love to put together a Valentines mix for you, this year I put together a collection of fly hip hop & R&B songs you can vibe out to with your lover. Even if your single I still think you can throw this mix in your iPod and enjoy the good energy. Thank you so much to Gabby V for adding to the sexy by hosting the tape! Peace to my man Boogie B for always coming through on the artwork.
This is #Earflirting, enjoy!”

mixtape mondays – get the f*ck up

Definitely one of my favorites and one for all the hip hop heads out there. “Get The F*ck Up” is mixed by San Francisco’s DJ Apollo aka P-LO Style, one third of The Triple Threat DJs and Original Invisibl Skratch Piklz. The tracks, mixing and scratching is so clean and refreshing, we hope you enjoy!

And if you still don’t have it, you also need to download DJ Apollo’s Reggae Dancehall Classics!

“Made in 2000 during the days of the underground indie hip hop movement when there was a new indie label everyday. This is the sound of True-school hip hop which is missed and much needed in the music today. The inspiration for this one was to give respect to real hip hop artists, putting out real hip hop records.” -DJ Apollo

This week’s Bubble Gum welcomed special guest DJ E-Man (Unrivaled DJ’s, Power 106, Big Boy’s Neighborhood). We also welcomed back DJ sourMilk from a little break touring with Dev. As always, good music and good vibes filled the Blu Monkey as they do every first Tuesday of the month. Shouts out to Playmaker and B-Eazy for starting the night of right and of course E-Man for murdering the tables and then sourMilk for shutting down the night like only he can! Be sure to come out next month!

This month Bubble Gum had special guest DJ’s Mr.Choc (World Famous Beat Junkies) and Vick One. We also celebrated the birthday of Miss Alynette of Q104.7. As always the vibe was nothing but love. DJ Playmaker opened up with some classic hip hop and new jack, followed up by Vick One who somehow dropped R.Kelly’s Bump and Grind into his set. Mr. Choc shut it down with that classic Beat Junkie Sound and DJ B Eazy ended the night for us.

Check out the pics and don’t miss it next month!

mixtape mondays: beats, vibes & crates vol.2

Happy Monday y’all! We have a really good mix for you guys today… this one is called Beats, Vibes & Crates Vol.2 mixed by DJ KS. Very dope mix with a really cool vibe, just check the track list after the jump and you’ll see why we were first drawn to it.

“When I say Beats, Vibes and Crates has no format, I mean it… this mix features some Hip-Hop, Soul and Slow Jams, there is a continuity to the mix though. Starts off with some Jay Dee aka J Dilla, 90s productions, then comes in the original flipped on Stakes is High, opening up a selection of jazz and soul: Mystic Brew is sampled on Tribe’s “Electric Relaxation”, Minnie Riperton “Inside my love” sampled on Tribe’s “Lyrics to Go” (also flipped by Dilla on “The Look of Love” and by many others), “Girl I think the world about you” is sampled on De La Soul’s “Buddy” (and yes I was pretty happy with myself, when I had the idea of throwing those Commodores drums over Minnie Riperton’s break). “Don’t Stop Loving Me” by LTD sampled for Poor Righteous Teachers, “Human Nature” of course flipped by Large Pro for Nas, Debarge’s “Stay with me” sampled on Biggie’s “One More Chance”, James Ingram sampled on MF Doom “Rhymes Like Dimes”, but overall this mix ends with some nice slow jams for you all to chill along with your soul mate ; if you happen to make babies on this mix maybe you can name the baby after me… just kidding.

This is all vinyl, sorry if that ‘Find a Way’ sounds used, it’s because it is. Even though I own 4 copies of this record, I’ve juggled them a lot over the years and the grooves are damaged. The mix is edited clean like out of the french dry cleaner. Peace out.” -DJ KS

photos: so much soul mix series 10 year anniversary party

10 years ago 2 DJ’s from The Bay Area got together and dropped a mixtape entitled ‘So Much Soul’. Since then, Vinroc and Shortkut have blessed us with 7 more timeless mixes. This past weekend marked the 10 Year Anniversary of the So Much Soul mix series and we were blessed enough to make the trip out to The Bay and celebrate with some really good people. The vibe was amazing and the music was just that. The night was filled with giveaways from Skull Candy and So Much Soul Clothing while Vinroc and Shortkut played non-stop feel good music for the soul, as well as hitting us with a Whitney Houston tribute set.

Check out the photos from Saturday nights celebration. We were definitely shown love out in The Bay and have to thank Vinroc, Shortkut and the people at SOM for that. It was well worth the trip.

mixtape mondays… on a tuesday! – #hiphopyearbook (1989)

The first installment to DJ SourMilk’s #HipHopYearbook comes to you from the year 1989. I had the pleasure to provide the artwork for this mix and hopefully I’ll be tapped to do the art for the remaining mixes. Download it, listen to it and enjoy it! For more on the mix read the posting below from SourMilk:

“So I got this idea last year and I wanted to see if I could actually follow through with it the whole year. I wanted to do a Hip-Hop Yearbook. Starting with 1989, every month, release a new mix for a new year. Jan is 89, Feb is 90, etc. Now I know what I’m getting myself into with all the Hip-Hop nerds out there. You guys are gonna tear me apart (selection wise). “How did you not put ____ on the 1990 mix?!” I’m just picking songs that I currently have in my Serato, give me a break. I’m sure there’s gonna be songs that I’m missing, but fuck you. I’m doing the mix, NOT YOU! You’re also gonna say, “But that song wasn’t released in 89!” For example, “Fight the Power” was on Fear of a Black Planet and that came out in 1990. Yes, it was. It was also on the Do the Right Thing Soundtrack though, which was released in 1989. Anyway, enough explaining. I’ll post a new mix (hopefully) at the end of every month until the year is over with artwork by good folks over at So Much Soul. I’m starting with 1989, so that download link is below. Please feel free to pass along, blog, blast, or delete if you don’t like it. THANK YOU!”

video: phonte – dance in the reign

Ran across this post on Facebook from The Roots “New video from our man Phonte, satellite Roots crew member and for a minute now…” Well, we did not know that Phonte was a satellite member of The Roots crew. I guess you do learn something new everyday. Anyway, check out the video, it’s dope.
