way back wednesdays – through the wire

We normally post songs that are from the soul and/or hold a certain meaning, and this weeks song hits home just the same from a different direction. Although Kanye’s “Through the Wire” is about his very traumatic accident and injuries, it is nonetheless a life experience that will definitely put your mind in a place of thankfulness regardless of the severity. This past Monday afternoon, my mom and I were in an accident. I was so shocked and it took a few minutes to register what was happening…and everything happened so fast! Within minutes of the accident and calling 911, the paramedics had me in a neck brace, on a board and on our way to the hospital before I could give my report to the CHP (which they came to the hospital to get shortly after). We were in the hospital for rest of the day and thankfully released with minor injuries. This was a long day of reflecting on how positive & thankful we all need to be in life, period. No matter how bad things seem to be, it could be worse…and it will get better!

ghetto dreams or otis?

Yesterday was a really good day for hip hop with the release of 2 really good music videos. Ghetto Dreams by Common and Nas off Commons upcoming album “The Dreamer The Believer” as well as Otis by Kanye West and Jay-Z off the newly released album “Watch The Throne”. We really enjoyed both videos. Ghetto Dreams brought us back to that 90′s style music video of the MC’s just doing their thing into the camera in black and white. And then we have Otis with Kanye and Jay-Z just looking like they’re having fun and making good music doing it. Although we haven’t had a chance to listen to the entire “Watch The Throne” album we have heard mixed reviews but need to listen for ourselves and we can’t wait for the release of “The Dreamer The Believer” this fall.

After checking these videos out on YouTube we noticed a HUGE difference in views. While Otis is killing it with over 1million views, Ghetto Dreams trails behind at whats seems as a really low 162,000+ views. To us, that’s a shame. Both of these videos are equally ill in their own way.

What do you think? Ghetto Dreams or Otis? Peep the videos after the jump.

soul sundays – flashing lights

Released in late 2007, “Flashing Lights” was widely regarded as the best song on Kanye’s ‘Graduation’ album. This song features Dwele on its chorus with additional vocals by Connie Mitchell (of the Australian electronic group Sneaky Sound System) and I must say this is such a great collabo! This is definitely one of those eyes closed, head nodding songs set on repeat…And the video is just as intriguing and as crazy as the song! Enjoy.

Happy Soul Sunday!

mixtape mondays – 808′s & heartleak

After having the chance to catch Kanye’s performance live at Coachella we felt it necessary to post a Kanye mix. Here’s one of my favorite’s done by 2 of the most talented dudes that I know, the LA Leakers. They did this mix back in ’08 and the only thing I hate about this mix is that it’s only 25 minutes long. Either way, you need this. So download it. =)

the video of 2011?

So Kanye West has dubbed this “the video of 2011″. The song is called “Yonkers” From Tyler The Creator directed By Wolf Haley and filmed By Luis Panch Perez. We personally think that the video is madd interesting. We want to know what you think… video of 2011 or is it way too early to call?
