way back wednesdays – oh no

“From 2000 Album: “Lyricist Lounge Vol.2″…..

Lyricist Lounge 2 is the second installment in Rawkus Records Lyricist Lounge album series. The release was one of Rawkus’ most commercially successful releases, featuring the hit crossover singles, “Oh No” and “Get Up”, the former charting on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its success, Lyricist Lounge 2 drew criticisms from underground fans, mainly due to the album’s more commercial sound, and also because of its focus on established artists, unlike the first installment, which largely featured up-and-coming MC’s.

The album features appearances from Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Nate Dogg, Q-Tip, Wordsworth, Cocoa Brovaz, Beanie Sigel, Royce Da 5’9″, Ghostface Killah, Saukrates, Redman, Talib Kweli, dead prez, Kool G Rap, M.O.P., Big Noyd, Prodigy, Erick Sermon, Sy Scott, Planet Asia, Punchline, Cobra Red, Phil Da Agony, C-Town, Dilated Peoples, Master Fuol, JT Money, Pastor Troy, Macy Gray and Guru, as well as late hip hop legends The Notorious B.I.G. and Big L.”

soul sundays – 1 thing

Unofficially released in 2004, Amerie’s “1 Thing” became her most successful song. Produced by Rich Harrison, the song was built around a sample of The Meters’ 1970 version of the theme song from Oh! Calcutta! adding a bongo drum, a cowbell and a ride cymbal to the already ten second back & forth breakdown between drums and guitar. The video was directed by Chris Robinson.

Amerie said that the inspiration from the song came from a conversation she had with Harrison “about relationships and how there’s always one thing that keeps you attracted to someone. No matter what they do or how they act, there’s that one undeniable thing that keeps you coming back.” She told Blender that the “one thing” “could be bringing flowers, or something more … physical. People think I’m just this good girl, but there are other sides they don’t see.”
