On this Soul Sunday, we wanted to celebrate the life of the beautiful Whitney Houston. “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is just one of those feel good songs that you can’t help but want to literally get up and dance to! We hope you enjoy this weeks pick, and our prayers go out to Whitney’s family and friends…Rest in peace Whitney.
soul sundays: come close
Today’s Soul Sunday song comes to you from Common ft. Mary J Blige from Common’s most questionable album, Electric Circus. Enjoy!
soul sundays – angel (suite for ma dukes)
This Soul Sundays pick is nothing less than amazing…Dwele’s “Angel” is already such a great song, but you add Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the orchestra to it…leaves me speechless. With no rehearsal, seeing Dwele’s reaction makes me appreciate the collaboration that much more. A Suite for Ma Dukes is a live musical tribute to J Dilla arranged and conducted by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson with the help of Carlos Nino and a 60-piece orchestra.
Atwood-Ferguson said, “Dilla’s music is so heartfelt, soulful and transcendent. It is perfect for someone like me to reinterpret and celebrate in my own way. It’s really been fun for me to explore his music in an orchestral setting.”
We hope you enjoy and have a great Soul Sunday!
soul sundays – 1 thing
Unofficially released in 2004, Amerie’s “1 Thing” became her most successful song. Produced by Rich Harrison, the song was built around a sample of The Meters’ 1970 version of the theme song from Oh! Calcutta! adding a bongo drum, a cowbell and a ride cymbal to the already ten second back & forth breakdown between drums and guitar. The video was directed by Chris Robinson.
Amerie said that the inspiration from the song came from a conversation she had with Harrison “about relationships and how there’s always one thing that keeps you attracted to someone. No matter what they do or how they act, there’s that one undeniable thing that keeps you coming back.” She told Blender that the “one thing” “could be bringing flowers, or something more … physical. People think I’m just this good girl, but there are other sides they don’t see.”
Happy Soul Sunday!
soul sundays – nothing even matters
With all the excitement we have had going on in our lives, there was no hesitation that this song be todays pick for Soul Sundays! “Nothing Even Matters” is definitely a song we hold dear to our hearts and reflects why we do what we do…All for the LOVE…it’s that simple. It’s our motivation, inspiration & what gets us through every day! We hope you enjoy this song as much as we do!
Happy Soul Sunday!
soul sundays – free
Of her 1976 album ‘This Is Niecy’, Deniece Williams’ “Free” is our pick for this weeks Soul Sunday. “Free” was Williams’ breakthrough single as it reached #2 on the Billboard Black singles chart in May of 1977, and still loved today as much as it was then. We hope you enjoy this throwback as much as we do!
Happy Soul Sundays!
soul sundays – i think i love you
Happy Soul Sunday! This weeks song is by one of our very favorites (as you may or may not have seen from our very first “Soul Sundays” post)….Dwele’s “I Think I Love You”. It just feels so good to hear songs like this, directed toward genuine love between two people regardless of longevity or history, you can’t deny the love you have for one another. We hope you enjoy this weeks Soul Sunday song!
soul sundays – lifetime
Happy Soul Sunday! Today’s pick comes to you from none other than Maxwell. Lifetime is one of the singles from Maxwell’s third album entitled “Now” released in 2001. Now was Maxwell’s first no.1 album on the Billboard album chart. Enjoy!
soul sundays – monday morning
Happy Soul Sunday! Today’s pick comes to you from Melanie Fiona. Monday Morning from “WQST presents Melanie Fiona meets the Illadelphonics” is my favorite song from this mixtape. This version of of Monday Morning, in my opinion, blows away the album version. Super duper soulful and you can just feel the emotion that she puts out into this joint.
Enjoy!

soul sundays – unbreakable
This weeks pick is not only a song for “Soul Sundays”, but a very special birthday celebration. Off Alicia Keys’ Unplugged album, “Unbreakable” is a very positive & uplifting love song. With so much negativity in this world, especially in regards to relationships, it’s been so nice to have a song that reflects on some of the strongest relationships whose lives have been in the spotlight (with the exception of one) and have been so inspirational. Happy Soul Sunday & Happy Birthday Raul “Boogie” Caracoza! I love you.
